LO: Describe a place. Austwick p.87. Writing challenge.
A. 1. Describe the island, using synonyms. 2. Describe the island, using antonyms.
B. CREATIVE WRITING: giving a balanced
description of your hometown, in ten sentences. Underline the descriptors, and
circle the connectives.
Example, with emphasis on
connectives and descriptors.
Our home is
in Strand, South Africa. One hundred
meters from our front door, as the crow flies, is the beach. The Atlantic current brings cold
water, but we swim there nevertheless. During winter, however,
we have to wear wetsuits, although it is cumbersome to get in
and out of.
The place
gets crowded during the short, yet pleasant summer. The towering
hotels and apartments blocks along Beach Road all seem to be occupied then, teeming
with holiday makers. Most people spend their time outside: fishing, walking their dogs, swimming,
surfing, paragliding or just sitting and watching the waves as they meditate or
read a book. Moreover, some visitors
go to the expansive Cheetah Outreach, and contribute considerable sums
to the organization. Furthermore, since it is so picturesque,
some advertising companies come all the way to do their photo shoots on the new
promenade. The streets, restaurants and shops are then all bustling with
activity.
In contrast (or, on the other hand), the place
is rather deserted during the wet and miserable winters when snow
lies on the mountains. During the cold season, we stay indoors, popping
out occasionally to the shops or the public library, or attending
midday-concerts at the University of Stellenbosch, since the weather is too
chilly to go out in the evening.
